HOA RESIDENCY is a space dedicated to the development of a decolonial perspective on race, gender and territory within the contemporary art, based in São Paulo - Brasil. HOA RESIDENCY is an artist-led self-funded art space that includes studios, accommodation and common spaces for the production and development of research and activities. HOA RESIDENCY has also an online extension through the HOA FREE ART SCHOOL project and many other curatorial programmes.

MISSION

HOA promotes artistic exchange and experimentation. We create opportunities for emerging and established artists, curators and writers to reflect on what they do, position their practice within relevant decolonial global discourse, create career-defining research and commissions, and network with colleagues. We forge international collaborations to build shared platforms to incubate, to present and to discuss common practices and themes. Our guiding objectives are to:
- Facilitate mobility of cultural practitioners to develop their practice through a greater access to learning, resources and networks.
- Foster mutual understanding via artistic practice and exchange. - Strengthen international collaborations and partnerships through organisations, collectives and networks.
- Develop a method of intellectual empowerment for artists from socially disadvantaged backgrounds through scholarships, financial and curatorial support in order to promote commercial and institutional inclusion in the contemporary art scene in favor of diversity.
- Encourage critical and engaging practices in the decolonial arts and create opportunities for public interaction, dissemination and enjoyment.
- Promote contemporary visual culture, particularly underrepresented practices and practitioners, and contributing to international critical discourse through our programmes.

HOME & FACILITIES

The HOA residency takes place in a house from the 1980s, built by the late actress and icon of Brazilian theater, Ruth Escobar, serving as a stage for various artistic meetings in the city during the last century. It is located in Pacaembu neighborhood, near to many of São Paulo’s important land- marks as the art déco stadium of Paulo Machado de Carvalho, and major art spaces such as Armando Alvares Penteado Foundation (FAAP), Moreira Salles Institute (IMS), Museum of Art of São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP), Petra Belas Artes and many others. HOA residency can fully accommodate up to 6 residents. With interchangeable spaces of domestic size, the house is an ideal base for research and developing ideas.
We also consider the entire house, from the garden to the presentation room, as ‘studios’, rather than having dedicated spaces solely for work.

PROGRAMMES

HOA provides opportunities for artists, curators and writers to develop their practice, explore connections, and build collaborations with colleagues, communities and institutions through artistic exchange. Residencies form the core of HOA´s work. We support and facilitate the professional development of cultural practitioners at all levels of their career, from emerging to established art professionals. We provide our residents with a platform to incubate their ideas and showcase them to their international peers and the general public. Residents are selected to take part in our programmes for up to three months at a time. Our residency programme covers a wide range of media, focusing on critical issues in contemporary art, as well as everyday life. Our programmes bring together practitioners from all around the world exploring common ideas and practices. Our selection process varies depending on the specific residency programme, partner, funder, and place.

Our residents are selected via: Open calls for applications, which are reviewed by a jury of art professionals. Solicited proposals or nominations from liked-minded institutions, artist networks, or organisations, which are assessed by a selection panel based on availability.
